Software Version 2 FAQ

Listed below are frequently asked questions about Version 2 of our Windows Software

  1. Can I install over my existing Version 1 software?
  2. Can I keep my existing Version 1 data files?
  3. What hard drive formats are supported in Version 2?
  4. Will Version 2 work on Apple/Macintosh (Mac)?
  5. Will Version 2 work with my network setup (server/client)?
  6. What are the changes from the previous versions?
  7. How do I install in a user account which does not have administrator rights?
  8. How do I prevent a test taker from looking around my computer?
  9. How do I make NCS3000 compatible with SigmaSoft 2.0?

1. Can I install over my existing Version 1 software?

No, you must first unregister your Version 1 software, then install and register the Version 2 software. If you are upgrading, it is recommended that you back up your data files first (copy them to another location).

2. Can I keep my existing Version 1 data files?

Yes, if you are moving to another computer, you can copy it to the new computer. If you are upgrading, it is recommended that you back up your data files first (copy them to another location).

3. What hard drive formats are supported in Version 2?

Version 1 of our software was limited to FAT or FAT32 drives. Version 2 works on NTFS formatted drives as well.

4. Will Version 2 work on Apple/Macintosh (Mac)?

We do not support this configuration and have no reports (successful or otherwise) for this version. However, Version 1 did work on a Mac using Virtual PC, and is still available.

5. Will Version 2 work with my network setup (server/client)?

Yes, and the network setup has improved. Using a new command-line switch while installing, (/N), you may specify where the server is located, and still allow the software to install and load locally, improving the speed of start up, administration, and limiting network bandwidth usage.

6. What are the changes from the previous versions?

The biggest change is that Version 2 allows registration and installation of coupons on Windows NT, 2000 and XP, and should support future versions of the Windows operating system. It has been converted from 16-bit to 32-bit to allow it to be run under current 32-bit operating systems.

Support for Windows 3 and similar operating systems has been discontinued in this version. For the time being, Version 1 of the Windows software will still be available.

Older DOS file formats (Interactive Software and On-Site Software) are no longer supported.

7. How do I install in a user account which does not have administrator rights?

Log in as a user with Administrator rights, and run SETUP with the user (/U) command-line switch (e.g. SETUP /U). During installation, you will be prompted for the location to install the user's shortcuts. The program files are installed to their usual location. First time registration must then be done while still in Administrator mode. Once registered, the user can then run the software with reduced rights, and administer and score tests.

8. How do I prevent a test taker from looking around my computer?

Under Options, Administration, there are password and "keyboard hook" options which should be enabled to ensure minimum disruptions while testing. The password option prevents test takers from progressing beyond the end of the test. The keyboard hook option, when checked, disables "Windows" keys to prevent loading other programs while testing. This is especially required to prevent unfair assistance on aptitude tests such as the MAB-II. It is enabled by default in the MAB software only.

9. How do I make NCS3000 compatible with SigmaSoft 2.0?

There were file name changes for the 2.0 version that the old NCS3000 utility does not yet know about due to older 8 character limitations that affect the JVIS, JPI-R and SFPQ. A workaround is to copy the file name to the old format. For example, SIGMAJVIS.INI in the Windows folder should be copied to SIGMAJVS.INI. Here are the affected files:
SIGMAJVIS.INI -> SIGMAJVS.INI
SIGMAJPIR.INI -> SIGMAJPR.INI
SIGMASFPQ.INI -> SIGMASIX.INI
